These pretty strips of light are plastic diffused backlights, often seen in LCD displays. Normally they’re tucked behind the LCD and shine light from below. Each LEDs is encased in the edge of the thickness of the light guide plate. The light guide plate is a special type that is very good at diffusing light, it provides near-uniform lighting. The other flat side of the LGP has a reflector on it ,so you only get light from the top (otherwise the backlight would lose 1/2 the brightness unnecessarily).

The LED backlight has two basic configurations: Bottom and Edge lit. In both types the LEDs are the light source that are focused into a diffuser that distributes the light evenly behind the viewing area. In bottom-lit configuration there are many LEDs mounted uniformly behind the display, it offers more uniform and brighter lighting and consumes more power.In Edge lit configuration, the LEDs are mounted to side (typically the top) as the light source which are focused into the diffuser, it offers a thinner package and consumes less power.

The backlight just like an LED, the led light with 1.8~3.3V voltage(White,blue and green is 2.6~3.3V, red is 1.8~2.2V, ) and the current Max is 20mA,but we suggest that use 5~15mA will better.In the motherboard PCBA, they are configured to operate with typically a +5V DC power to start , so you will need add to a resistor in series or parallel like any other LED, to set the current you need.
